BLACK BOOK BREAKFAST: Susan Ferrier + David Baker

Fritz Porter

When Chris Tippett, John Sease and David Baker began their collaboration they all shared the honor and privilege of working with the master of architectural poetry: Bobby McAlpine. It was during this tenure that I had the good fortune of meeting one member of this esteemed trio: David Baker.

Matt and I had recently decided to move back to Charleston after one too many snow days and long commutes in Connecticut. I had been following Bobby's work for some time, and knew that I wanted to work with him. So after a leisurely meeting at Kudu Coffee downtown, and a few rough sketches on a napkin, we knew we had made a good decision.

As luck would have it, David was the project manager assigned to us. From day one, working with David was a dream. He was the perfect balance of creative and practical. He understood scale and proportion better than most, and he was able to whip out intricately hand drawn plans with seemingly no effort. He could to talk me through difficult aesthetic decisions with gentle encouragement, while simultaneously kicking ass and taking names of subs and contractors that were creating shortcuts and not producing the craftsmanship worthy of the design.

That was nearly 10 years ago and I still consider David not only a friend, but a unique, unsung talent that deserves a little limelight. So I was thrilled to hear that he and two of his equally talented colleagues had teamed up to form their own firm, TSB Architecture. We are honored and excited to host David and his long time friend, and fellow McAlpine partner, Susan Ferrier to our next Black Book Breakfast on November 28th.

If you are not familiar with Susan Ferrier, you should be. She is known for creating sensuous, atmospheric interiors, and her moody, ethereal aesthetic exudes drama and sophistication that perfectly compliments the architecture of the space by enhancing it without overshadowing.

She founded Susan Ferrier Interiors in 2018 after more than 18 years as a partner at the architecture and design firm McAlpine. Her work has been featured in publications around the country including the The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Veranda, House Beautiful, Traditional Home, Harper’s Bazaar, Coastal Living, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and many others. During her time at McAlpine, the firm was on both Architectural Digest’s AD100 list and Elle Décor’s A-List.

I hope you will join us to meet these two great talents in person and hear more about their creative process, new career ventures  and their extensive experience in the field. It is sure to be an insightful and inspiring discussion!
